A judge has ruled that Sonja and Wicknell were never married. Sonja said this was a very sad day for Zimbabwe with wider implications for women in similar customary unions. "Today the courts in Zimbabwe have decided that me, Sonja Louise Madzikanda, I have never been married, which is okay. I am going to do a mini docuseries and why I am doing this is I really wanna help some women out there. There are some women who are in relationships that are not registered who are gonna get the same judgement because any judgement that is made in the courts can be referenced by someone tomorrow.
So Wicknell vs Sonja today, tomorrow could end up damaging or ruining a lot of lives. So it is very important decision that has been made today. My hope is to warn women, that don't do it, don't put yourself through this nonsense, just to be told that you were just nonsensing for no reason. Why have the kids, why gather your relatives, why get the tent, why come home on time when someone says come, why cook for someone.
Inini my grandparents were never married, a lot of my aunts and uncles were never married, all my friends are not married, thats what today has shown me. Zimbabweans, if you have never registered your little roora situation and if you have not had muchato ka, you are single, why is someone giving you are curfew, even if he has paid, $20, $50, $100 for you, why are you cooking, why are you cleaning, you are just as good as the hoe standing on the side of the road, chatting up some guy. So its a sad day really for our culture for our history." The judgement could have a huge impact on the former couple's case in South Africa. |
