She said in an interview on Star FM : “I had my first child
when I was 16. Obviously I had to drop out of school, went back to school the
following year to finish off my O Levels.
So my dad (a pastor) was not in the country, so you can only imagine how my mum
took it. Any mother getting such news would be shocked, she was devastated. She
did not know what to do, tried to ask me saka baba vemwana varipi so. I’m
scared. And I’m like handizivi. I got married off, sort of, kind of, I had to
go stay with the guy. You know our African culture, so that is what happened,
and that did not go well, tanga tiri vana we were very young.
I tried to still go
back to school but I really could not handle the morning sickness and school as
well. So I ended up just dropping out. Ndakangotizizwa and when that did not
work out I came home. I had another child at 18. In all of this I did have a
boyfriend of mine who loved me a lot. I had a boyfriend when I got pregnant by
somebody else. He was there he just did not know I was pregnant and he just
heard from people, that’s what happened. We stayed in the same neighbourhood. We
just continued dating when I came home and then I fell pregnant again and I got
married and had another boy. I think the marriage lasted about a year. I guess
we were so young again and it just really didn’t work out.
Now Takawira says she tries to help out teen mothers as
best as she could.
