Disgraced Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 23 years
in prison.
Weinstein was found guilty of rape and a criminal s.ex act
on February 24, at the end of a six-week trial. Justice James Burke, who
presided over the trial in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, sentenced
Weinstein to 20 years for the criminal s.ex act and three years for rape. He was
facing a minimum of five years and a maximum of 29.
His conviction was greeted with jubilation around the
world, as women who had suffered sexual harassment and assault celebrated the
downfall of the man whose depraved behaviour ignited the #MeToo movement.
Weinstein has maintained that any sexual activity was
consensual and spoke in court, saying he had fond memories of his accusers.
"I'm not going to say these aren't great people. I had
wonderful times with these people. I'm just genuinely confused. Men are
confused about this issue."
