According to 7NewsBelize, Mark Shawn Cairnse was arraigned in front of the Belmopan Magistrate's Court for the offences of manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, and driving a motor vehicle with a blood-alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit.
He was granted bail in the sum of $10,000 with conditions. He has to surrender his travel documents to the court. He also has to report to the Sittee River Police Sub-Station every Friday, until his case is disposed of completely. Additionally, if he wants to travel outside of Belize, he has to seek the permission of the court.
His case has been adjourned until January 20, 2020. He is being represented by attorney Hurl Hamilton.
Police who initially thought the man was American said of the accident "On Friday last sometime around 11:40pm Hopkins police were called to an area on the main road just outside Hopkins or south of Hopkins whereupon arrival they observed the motionless body of Steven Olivas 40 years of a Hopkins address and a little further from the body the police observed a blue in color bicycle with extensive damage to the back wheel. What was reported to the police is that Mr. Olivas was south bound when he was knocked down from behind by a white Range Rover at the time being driven from behind by one Mark Cairnse. The scene was processed and the body was removed to the Southern Regional Hospital where it was pronounced dead. So far police have since carried out an investigation and have since arrested and charged Mark Clarins for the crimes of manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, driving with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit."
