Prophet Walter Magaya paid his wife, Tendai $950 522.99 from
2013 to 2017 through bank transfers. She did not pay a penny in income tax.
Magaya himself was paid $2 403 658.24 by his church over the same period
and he did not pay any Pay as You Earn tax (PAYE) as required by law.
This emerged in court as Magaya’s church, The Prophetic
Healing Deliverance Ministries was dragged to court for tax evasion. The church
is said to have made close to $30 000 000 from church regalia, anointing oil,
holy water sells and running a guests house at Yadah Hotel.
The church representative, Nelson Marimo appeared before
Harare Magistrate Learnmore Mapiye facing four counts of contravening the VAT by
failing to submit income returns, failing to withhold employees tax, failing to
keep proper records and neglecting to declare exports.
The court heard that sometime in October 2018; ZIMRA
conducted tax investigations and recovered financial statements from PHD
extending from 2013 to 2017. Statements were also recovered from the Commercial
Bank of Zimbabwe which was submitted by accused for loan application.
The statements showed that PHD had realised sales amounting
to $28 706 040 during the period 2013 to 2017, and during that period the
accused did not submit income tax returns to ZIMRA.
The trial continues.
