Promise Moyo (46) of Bury St Edmunds was nabbed before he
was due to complete a school run.
Officers heard reports of the Hyundai i40 cab being driven
erratically and stopped Moyo. He was found to be four times over the
drink-drive limit, recording 158mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The limit is
35mg.
On Twitter, St Edmundsbury Police said Moyo was ‘on the way
to a school run’ when he was stopped. The statement added that alcohol was
found in the cab’s centre console.
Moyo pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol before
Ipswich Magistrates’ Court. He was sentenced to 18 weeks imprisonment and
disqualified from driving for three years.
Inspector Chris Hinitt, of the serious collision
investigation team, said: “I am completely shocked by the level of alcohol that
Promise Moyo had in his system. To get behind the wheel of a car when more than
four-times the legal alcohol limit is absolutely astounding.
“Driving a licensed cab in such circumstances clearly and
directly imperils the lives of others. We in the serious collision investigation
team - along with many other police colleagues - have seen too often the
devastation caused by drink-driving and in my opinion it is completely reckless
for anyone to take that risk.”
