Tennis fans have slammed a decision to ban a catsuit worn
by US tennis champion Serena Williams as part of changes to the dress code at
the French Open.
French Tennis Federation President Bernard Giudicelli
singled out Williams' black and red outfit, which she wore at the tournament in
May, in an interview with Tennis Magazine saying "certain limits"
would be imposed on player's uniforms going forward.
"I think that, sometimes, we've gone too far," he
said. "[The catsuit] will no longer be accepted. One must respect the game
and place."
The comments have prompted a lively debate on social media,
with users attributing the decision to racism, sexism and ignorance.
Legendary tennis player Billie Jean King slammed the
organizers' decision in a tweet, echoing what many critics have said of the
reported new dress code. "The policing of women's bodies must end,"
she wrote in a tweet on Saturday. "The 'respect' that's needed is for the
exceptional talent Serena Williams brings to the game."
