Music promoter and businessman, Simba Chakare said he was saddened
on the campaign trail when voters in his ward were only excited about T Shirts
and food.
“I learnt the heart-breaking truth during our door to door
campaign. People in our ward don’t believe they deserve the best in terms of service
delivery. Getting bread, T-Shirts and rice during campaigns is what excites
them. They will not even demand basic like water or electricity, refuse
collection because they no longer think they deserve it and this is a very sad
truth.
In all of it I have learnt a lot and grown as a person.
Instead of viewing from the back of the line I came to the front and first hand
experienced the everyday life and needs of the ordinary person in our ward.
Regardless of the outcome tomorrow I have already won in my own personal
capacity because not many people my age would have dared challenge a system
that people had become so accustomed to.
A system that is designed not to let anyone participate if
they are not known by certain people. A system that really hasn’t really been favourable
to the ordinary person. Whoever wins we as ward 26 will hold him accountable we
need the basic service delivery and more, in my capacity I have set a standard
that must be met and surpassed and it also applies to me if I win. My actions
in the ward will always be used as a yard stick to measure what the winner will
bring to the table. I will not stop working with ward 26 and if I win I am
prepared to work with whichever government is voted into power.”
