Fishing nets have forced the complete shutdown of Harare’s
biggest water treatment plant – Morton Jaffray from tomorrow.
The Harare City Council said the shutdown will allow for
the removal of trapped fishing nets at the intake tower on Lake Chivero and to
fix malfunctioning wire ropes on the periscopes. The trapped nets have jammed
three valves at the intake tower and the mixing chamber rendering them
inoperable. The periscopes at the intake tower cannot be adjusted making it
difficult to abstract water from the optimum quality depth.
The plant reopens on Sunday 4 February at around 1600hrs at
which time treatment and pumping of potable water resumes.
